Turns Out, Your Pillow Height Really Does Matter — Here's the Science

chhose your lift, your height in your pillow for support

If you've ever laid awake convinced your pillow was somehow "off" but couldn't explain why, you're not imagining things. A team of Japanese researchers actually studied this — and what they found puts real data behind something we've been saying all along: pillow height isn't a preference, it's a measurement problem.

The Study

Published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science in 2023, the research followed 84 people dealing with chronic neck pain and related symptoms — the kind of stiff-shoulder, achy-neck stuff that makes mornings miserable. Researchers custom-fit each person's pillow height using a structured measurement method, then tracked how their symptoms changed over three months.

The results were hard to argue with: half of the participants reached what's considered a clinically meaningful improvement in neck pain — not just "felt a little better," but enough improvement to count as a real, measurable difference by clinical standards.

The researchers also found something worth paying attention to: your ideal pillow height correlates strongly with your body size — height and weight both track closely with how much support your neck actually needs. In other words, there genuinely isn't a one-size-fits-all pillow. Your neighbor's perfect pillow height might be doing nothing for you, and it's not because one of you is "wrong" about pillows — it's because your bodies are different.

Why This Isn't Surprising to Us

This is exactly the problem Crown Lift® was built to solve. Most pillows are one fixed height, forever — great for whoever they were designed for on average, and slowly worse for everyone else as the fill compresses and flattens over time (what we call the Head Drop™). Once that happens, your neck stops getting the support it had on day one, whether or not the pillow "looks" fine.

The idea that height needs to be adjustable — not just softer or firmer, but actually variable — is exactly why Crown Lift comes with three support cores instead of one fixed piece. Instead of throwing out a pillow you already love the moment it goes flat, you restore the height it lost.

We're not claiming Crown Lift was clinically tested the way this study's custom-fitted pillows were — it wasn't, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. But it's genuinely reassuring to see published research confirm the core idea we've built the whole product around: getting your pillow height right, specifically for your body, matters more than people think.
