Morning Neck Pain After Surgery: What to Track and What to Tell Your Surgeon

Morning Neck Pain After Surgery: What to Track and What to Tell Your Surgeon

Quick answer: Waking up with a stiff or sore neck after surgery is common enough that many people ask about it, but morning pain can have several causes, and only your surgeon can tell you what's normal for you. The most useful thing you can do is track a few simple details for a week or two and bring them to your appointment.

Why mornings can feel worse

After hours in one position, muscles and joints can feel stiff. The way your head and neck were supported overnight may also play a part. These are general possibilities, not a diagnosis. More on how pillows change over a night.

A simple 7-day morning log

Write a few lines each morning, ideally before you start your day:

Day Pain level (0-10) Where it hurts How I slept Pillow setup Notes
1
2
3
4
5
6
7

What to tell your surgeon

  • When the pain started and whether it's getting better, worse or staying the same
  • Whether it's worse in the morning, at night, or after certain activities
  • How you're sleeping (position, how many hours, how often you wake)
  • What pillow or setup you use
  • Anything new: numbness, tingling, weakness, fever or changes in swallowing

The last item is not something to save for your appointment. Call your surgeon promptly about new neurological symptoms or anything that worries you.

Things worth noticing about your sleep setup

  • Does your head feel like it sinks back during the night?
  • Do you stack, fold or adjust your pillow during the night?
  • Do you wake up with your hand or arm under your head?
  • Does your pillow flatten out over time?

These are observations to share, not conclusions to act on without your care team.

All of these things I noticed before and after surgery were notes I kept in Chat GPT. I had no other way to track my own symptoms and they changed so much day to day. That annoyed me because every single app I downloaded was impersonal and felt too much like I was filling out a form or spreadsheets.

I would tell chat everything. If I was driving down the road, I would just open chat and speak what was happening to my body. Many times it was a neuro symptom causing dizziness or tunnel vision.

Sitting in my living room, in the Target isle, in the restaurant...anywhere I felt something new or odd, I told it to chat. That became my record. I later used that to compile a pattern of the things I had been experiencing and was able to show that to my doctors. I believe it was the only reason they listened, even if only somewhat.

So, by the time I had found my surgeon, Dr. Kim, who was amazing and listened to me, I had a pretty detailed list and dates to match it of what had been going on with me. After my surgery, I did more of the same...except this time my surgery was very complex and the first few weeks are a blur to me. I'm thankful I reported it all to chat, otherwise I couldn't tell you about it now.

I will say that from my own experience, this recovery was so much easier on me, and I know it was because I had the Crown Lift supporting my head and neck from day one. As much as I have been through over the years, and the research I've done, that I know for sure. If I ever didn't have it for some reason, I would wake up in pain the next morning. Since my one month after surgery, I hardly ever wake up stiff or in pain. I may go to bed that way, but after sleeping on Crown Lift, I wake up restored.
