What Is Head Drop?
Most people think their pillow supports their head.
But something else is happening while you sleep.
Your head slowly sinks into the pillow, and as it does, your neck follows.
This is called head drop.
Head drop happens when a pillow cannot support the weight of your head and the material compresses underneath it.
Instead of resting on stable support, your head gradually settles deeper into the pillow throughout the night.
"One of those products that immediately makes you wonder why it didn’t exist sooner."
"It’s not just another pillow or gimmick—it actually addresses a real problem with head and neck positioning during sleep... none of the 'ergonomic' pillows quite do what this does."
Your Head Is Heavier Than You Think
The average adult head weighs 10–12 pounds.
That weight presses downward into the pillow all night long.
Soft pillow materials may feel comfortable at first, but over time they compress under that constant pressure.
As the material spreads outward, the center of the pillow weakens and the head begins to sink lower and lower.
This is when head drop begins.
What Happens When Your Head Drops
When the head sinks into the pillow, the neck must bend to follow it.
Instead of maintaining a neutral position, the spine begins to curve.
This can create pressure in the muscles and joints that support the neck.
Over time, this can lead to:
• morning neck stiffness
• tension headaches
• shoulder discomfort
• difficulty finding a comfortable sleep position
Many people assume their pillow is simply too soft or too firm.
But the real problem is often head drop.
Why Fluffing Your Pillow Doesn’t Work
Most people try to solve the problem by fluffing their pillow or adding more fill.
This may temporarily raise the surface of the pillow, but it doesn’t fix the underlying issue.
Once your head rests on the pillow again, the material begins compressing under the weight.
Within minutes, the pillow settles and the head sinks again.
The cycle repeats night after night.
Why Most Pillow Designs Can't Prevent Head Drop
Many pillows attempt to solve this problem by changing the shape of the pillow.
Some add contours or raised neck supports.
Others use firmer materials or adjustable fill.
But if the crown of the head is not properly supported, gravity will still pull the head downward into the pillow.
The pillow surface alone cannot prevent head drop.
Support must come from underneath the crown of the head, where the weight is concentrated.
The Missing Piece: Crown of Head Support
When support is placed directly under the crown of the head, something important happens:
The head stops sinking.
Instead of collapsing into the pillow, the head remains elevated and the neck can rest in a more natural position.
This is the idea behind the Crown Lift® system.
Crown Lift provides targeted support beneath the crown of the head so the pillow surface can stay comfortable while preventing head drop.
Because sometimes the problem isn't your pillow.
It's what your pillow can't support.
